WorldAtlas recently named Sharon Springs one of the “7 Fairy-Tale Small Towns in Upstate New York.” With its tree-lined streets, historic charm, and nearby natural wonders like Howe Caverns, it’s easy to see why.
Nestled among the rolling hills of Schoharie County, the village blends small-town warmth with a sense of quiet wonder. Visitors are drawn to its grand old buildings — remnants of a spa era when travelers came from across the country to “take the waters.” Time has softened their edges, but their character still tells the story of the town’s remarkable past. Nearby, Howe Caverns and Secret Caverns add to the area’s sense of mystery and natural beauty, with underground passages and waterfalls hidden beneath the hills.
In every season, Sharon Springs feels like a step into another time. Spring brings soft blooms to Main Street, summer draws small festivals, and autumn wraps the hills in gold. Even in winter, the pace slows and the town seems to glow from within.
At the center of it all stands The American Hotel — our lovingly restored 1840s landmark on Main Street. Once a gathering place for travelers during the village’s spa heyday, the hotel was brought back to life after years of neglect and now welcomes guests once again. Each of our nine rooms combines historic character with modern comfort, and the wide front porch remains the perfect place to pause and take in the rhythm of village life.
For us, Sharon Springs isn’t just where we work — it’s home. The same sense of history and hospitality that earned this town its fairy-tale reputation is what inspires everything we do here at The American Hotel.
